Olympus Introduces the World’s First Autoclavable Flexible Video Bronchoscope

Orangeburg, N.Y. (August 23, 2007) – Olympus, a global leader in designing and delivering advanced and innovative healthcare solutions has introduced the world’s first flexible video bronchoscope to feature an Autoclavable design.  The innovative BF-Q180-AC is setting a new performance standard for flexible bronchoscopy by incorporating a rugged design capable of withstanding repeated exposure to steam sterilization as well as offering outstanding image quality and new optical image enhancement technology.

The clinical importance of having good visibility during bronchial observation to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment cannot be underestimated.  Therefore, the BF-Q180-AC was equipped with a high-resolution CCD that delivers large on-screen images and outstanding observation capabilities within the bronchial tree.  In addition to high-resolution imaging, the BF-Q180-AC features a new powerful imaging innovation called Narrow Band Imaging™ (NBI). 

NBI is an optical image enhancement technology that enhances the visibility of capillaries and vessels on the mucosal surface by only penetrating the surface of tissues and improving the contrast between the two for improved observation of mucosal morphology.  It works by altering the white light source to consist of specific wavelength bands, which take advantage of the scattering and absorption properties of human tissues. The improved visibility provided by NBI may improve examination efficiency by helping to reduce examination time and may also facilitate better biopsies.
